Spelling Bee
I
Each year, SWC Elementary participates in the Scripps Spelling Bee involving grades 4-8. The Scripps National Spelling Bee, founded in 1925 by nine newspapers to promote literacy, is the nation's largest, longest-running educational program. It brings together students worldwide to compete in Washington, D.C. The competition is designed to improve spelling, increase vocabulary, and develop correct English usage.
A classroom spelling bee is held first, where students compete to determine the top spellers from each class. Those finalists then face off in a school-wide competition—an afternoon assembly filled with multiple rounds of impressive S-P-E-L-L-I-N-G—to crown the school champion. The winner advances to the Regional Spelling Bee in Marshall, MN, and from there, the regional champion earns the opportunity to compete at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.
